Abigael van Alst (KU Leuven)

Bio

Abigael van Alst is a PhD researcher at KU Leuven’s MDRN lab. Her thesis Cosmic Constellations. Early 20th-Century Avant-Garde Cosmogonies explores how early 20th-century avant-gardists working in different art forms and informed by scientific advances joined forces to present the (new) universe coming about. She has published on Charles Baudelaire, Blaise Cendrars and Bruno Taut.

Abigael van Alst’s paper focuses on a Russian Futurist opera Victory Over the Sun (1913) by Aleksei Kruchenykh, Velimir Khlebnikov, Kazimir Malevich and Mikhail Matiushin, and shows that the idea of a fourth dimension inspired them to create an alter-rational new world.
